An Athlete Helping Athletes

The Athlete

Basketball has always been Malcolm’s first passion. It was an escape from a lot of the things that were going on in his personal life. Ever since the third grade, he knew he wanted to be a professional athlete and had it set in his mind that he would do anything to achieve that dream.

From getting cut from the varsity team in high school to having multiple injuries and transferring to a school on the opposite side of the country for his last year of college, Malcolm has gone through and sacrificed a lot to reach his goal. But once he achieved it, he realized it was worth every minute of struggle.

Playing overseas was one of the best experiences of his life. Through all of the ups and downs, Malcolm learned about who he was as a man and how to survive in a foreign country on his own. He gave his all to the game of basketball, and it is still a huge part of who he is today. This is why he aims to give back to so many other athletes.

The Author

Writing a book was never in the plan. Malcolm never even considered himself to be good at writing—not until his second year playing overseas. In his first couple of weeks there, all he had was a room, a computer (without an Internet connection), and a lot of time. He started thinking about how he got there, some of the obstacles he went through, and how blessed he was to be in a position that so many other athletes wanted to be in. Why had he been chosen? How had he made it this far? These questions made him reflect. So he began to write. And out came Lessons from the Game.

The more he wrote, the more inspired he got. He never thought that he would actually be able to turn his story into a book, but as he kept progressing, he saw his story as something to help others who went through or possibly will go through some of the same situations as he did.

Malcolm believes that everyone’s story is valuable—there isn’t anyone else who has been through the same experiences as you. If you can inspire and help someone else get through the things that you’ve already been through, why wouldn’t you? Malcolm remembers what it was like not having guidance or direction through basketball and other things that he had to navigate on his own; his story’s purpose is to help others get through their obstacles and show them that there is light on the other side of their dreams.

The Entrepreneur

The only thing Malcolm ever wanted to do besides being a professional athlete was to own his own business. He’s always had that entrepreneurial spirit even though he didn’t know what it was called at a young age. From selling candy bars and water bottles in middle school to shirts and shoes in high school, he’s a natural-born hustler.

Malcolm started his first official business when he was 21 years old and failed in so many ways. Through those failures, he learned a lot about what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, and he sees how much it has contributed to his success today.

To Malcolm, entrepreneurship is about taking a huge risk on your future for a vision only you can see. This is what he’s done his entire life. He’s sacrificed and believed in his vision despite other people who doubted him. It is about patience, determination, and grit, things that he has prided himself on for as long as he can remember. He believes that it takes a special type of person to become a successful entrepreneur, and athletes have these intangibles embedded in them, which is why Players Point Agency was created. It’s sports marketing and branding agency that designs and manages personal brands for professional athletes to help prepare them for opportunities on and off the playing field.

“We deeply believe that every athlete deserves a team who performs just as hard for them off the playing field, as they perform on the playing field,” said Lemmons.

The Speaker

Public speaking is said to be the number-one fear of most people. Most people fear being ostracized. Most people fear being talked about. Most people fear what others might think about them. For a long time, Malcolm fit right in with “most people.”

But the one thing that he’s learned is that people are going to say and think what they want about you regardless of what you say or do, so you might as well be who you are destined to be.

Just like writing, public speaking was never something he saw himself doing. But then he learned how much he could impact others through words. Through his experiences, and every time he has an opportunity to speak publicly, his aim is to change at least one person’s life.

To Malcolm, that is what speaking is all about. Words are extremely powerful; having the ability to present and pass on his message in front of an audience is one of the most inspiring and satisfying things he has been able to do in his life. Malcolm believes that his experiences are never for him to keep. Everything he does is about providing athletes and others with the tools that they need to be successful in all their lives’ pursuits.
